We knew at the end of book two that action was blakke occur, and in Spellbound we watch all of the effort come together to create the showdown we were chwrlton waiting for. In book one we had a lot of world building, meaning at times the action was somewhat slow. That’s why I’m not afraid to praise Spellbound in this review.
Aug 04, Bastard rated it it was amazing. I do want to see how it all turns out. Readers are given a detailed look into political systems, the characters, and the magic system. There was also a large change in the character Shannon; he went from a caring, wise, insightful person, and, though he was eaten by disease and worry, his transformation into a bitter, lonely, sour old man with few insights seemed off.
Writing that leaves you fully immersed in the story? This world is so cleverly devised and smart, it deserves to be far better known and Spellbound, along with Spellwright and Spellbreaker, comes highly recommended.
While hunting neodemons in her role as Warden of Ixos, Leandra obtains a prophetic spell that provides a glimpse one day into her future. I’m fascinated to see what happens next and will be following every word with the absorption of an apprentice spellwright.
Francesca practices a different kind of magic from Shannon and Cyrus’ Hierophantic magic is another beast entirely, its runes only produced by the heart muscle, being stored in cloth instead of his body or paper and is connected to air.
After reading Spellbound it’s easy for me to say that Blake Charlton is definitely one of the best and most talented new fantasy writers at this moment, because he writes good, entertaining and vivid fantasy prose. Story-wise, Spellbound is hit and miss. There were several fascinating things in Spellbound: Speaking of Nicodemusthe cacographic spellwright is not even the main attraction in Spellbound.
I had completely forgotten what she looked like, so she was a shell of a character in my mind, not quite vividly drawn as the rest of them. Spellbounx is pages long divided over a Prolog, fifty-two numbered chapters, and an Epilog. I did think that in many respects the writing was more deft and carried more feeling when describing or dealing with disabilities and intellectual matters such as medicinal treatment, disease, and disability and the idea of what exactly makes a monster or demon.
Characters that you can really believe are part of that world? Spellwright is his first novel. Okay, so he sorta hinted at it in an interview when discussing the cover art, so I don’t think I would have figured it out on my own otherwise.
There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Defying the standard trilogy setup We all know the format for trilogies. Deidre, being possessed by Typhon, is scheming and fighting Typhon’s control by undermining his plans at the risk of being discovered. Leaving aside the added bonus of world domination, Typhon genuinely seems to want to rescue his people.
He seemed to grasp what everyone else splelbound been telling him all along extremely suddenly – that’s more than just sudden, it’s extremely sudden. Jul 31, M. Like Spellwright, Spellbound is a great story within a story: Spellbound is a fantastic, exhilarating read that kept me flicking the pages at lightspeed, just to finish it.
With all its fast paced action, mystery and such a unique magical system, Spellbound earns a place as one of my top books. I liked how he linked two separate parallel stories together to build a great back-story. The Savanna Walker is an even more tragic case. This therefore made a “cacographer” a dyslexic person who was magical into a real problem, because when they touched spells, they misspelled that which they touched.
Charlton has impressed me more than I thought I could be impressed by an author. And the chaos surrounding Nico is affecting the world so profoundly that the kingdom to which he has fled to gather strength is on the brink of civil war, and he b,ake that his closest allies – even Francesca, whom he loves more than life itself – may be subject to the demon’s vast powers.

With all its fast paced action, mystery and such a unique magical system, Spellbound earns a place as one of my top books, and I can’t wait to see where Charlton dharlton readers next. Compared to the magic system, world-building once again lacks depth, but there have been noticeable improvements. Spellbound has nice moments of humour which lighten the atmosphere nicely.
